Clarinet Concerto
solo clarinet in A, double string orchestra, harp, celeste, timpani and percussion
23′57″
The clarinet has been a great joy in my life allowing me to connect with other people and 6nd a place in the community. I am especially grateful to the clarinet teachers, performers and friends in my life who have all been such wonderful inspiration and support on my journey. Each movement has been dedicated to a clarinettist that has made a signi6cant impact to my clarinet life. There is no intention of depicting the personality of the dedicatee's in musical terms - any resemblance is purely coincidental ;-)
This concerto divides the string section into two groups either side of the concert stage, pitting them against each other spacially, rhythmically and melodically. Both string groups battle with each other from opposite sides of the concert stage, hopefully giving the listener a more entertaining experience. The concerto also makes strong use of percussion instruments by asking them to support and echo the clarinet and the argument between the two string groups.
